Lashings World X1 Win the ResourceBank Twenty20
The second ResourceBank Twenty20 Competition organised by Shropshire County Cricket Club, was held at Wellington Cricket Club on Thursday 12 July 2007. This was a joint event, as Wellington were celebrating their 60th anniversary, whilst Shropshire were celebrating 50 years of Minor Counties cricket.
The participating teams were Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire, together with the famous Lashings World X1, made up of recent Test cricketers from around the world.
Recent heavy rains had made the Orleton Park ground very soft, but the host club had done a tremendous job in preparing the pitch and outfield so play could begin on time. A large crowd, which included 640 corporate guests, watched the days play, mostly in bright sunshine. The results were as follows:
First Semi Final Lashings v Cheshire
Lashings 120 for 9 (20 overs) Chris Cairns 78, Adam Sydall 3 for 4,
Nathan Dumelow 3 for 20
Cheshire 118 for 7 (20 overs) Nathan Dumelow 38, Nantie Hayward 3 for 11
Lashings won by 4 runs
Second Semi Final Shropshire v Staffordshire
Staffordshire 188 for 3 (20 overs) Grant Snyman 61, Paul Wilshaw 49,
Kim Barnett 47
Shropshire 92 all out (18.1 overs) Steve Taylor 26
Kim Barnett 3 for 14
Staffordshire won by 96 runs
Final - Lashings v Staffordshire
Staffordshire 106 for 8 (20 overs) Paul Wilshaw 43
Lashings 108 for 5 (20 overs) Greg Blewett 43, Chris Cairns 32
Lashings won by 5 wickets
A poor day for the hosts, the holders of the trophy, as they were soundly beaten by neighbours Staffordshire. Star of the day was undoubtedly New Zealand all rounder Chris Cairns who smashed 78 in 47 balls (7 sixes and 5 fours) to rescue Lashings from disaster against a spirited Cheshire side, and then calmly helped Australian Greg Blewett to get close to the Staffordshire score in the final before skipper Chris Harris hit the last ball of the match for four to end a nail biting game. All credit to Staffordshire, who easily accounted for Shropshire, before taking the stars of Lashings to the last ball in the final.
Shropshire County Cricket Club would like to than the sponsors of the day, ResourceBank, and all those who helped to make the day such a success. Also a big thanks to the three umpires, Peter Mitchell, Mike Sheehy and Steve Gale.
